The Serpent Is Rising is the third album by American band Styx, released in October 1973, a mere three months after their previous album Styx II in July 1973. The album was reissued in 1980 with new artwork and a new title, Serpent. The album peaked at 192 on the Billboard 200, their second-lowest charting album, and as of 2007 has sold fewer than 100,000 copies worldwide. Man of Miracles is the fourth album by Styx, released on November 8th 1974. This would be the band's last original album on the independent Chicago-based label Wooden Nickel Records before moving to the major label A&M. The album had a diverse sound, it showcased the style of two band members and a pre-commercial sound: James JY Young songs were more straight ahead hard rockers, while Dennis DeYoung songs were more mellow ballads, classical, and prog rock songs. In 1999, One Way released The Serpent Is RisingMan of Miracles, which contained two complete albums - The Serpent Is Rising 1974, originally released on RCA and Man of Miracles 1974, originally released on RCA - by Styx on one compact disc. Like with The Serpent Is Rising the weak tracks brings this album down to two and a half stars. However, The Wooden Nickel Recordings 2CD set is a very worthwhile way to get these early albums since you get some good stuff and sadly some real stinkers too. Styx's 3rd album THE SERPENT IS RISING and their Fourth album MAN OF MIRACLES. These would be their last albums under the Wooden Nicel label. It has Some of the really good songs on here have to be Jonas Psalter, The Grove Of Eglantine, Man Of Miracles, Southern Woman, 22 Years, Rock & Roll Feeling, Winner Take All, Witch Wolf, and many, many, more. These two albums are a must have for any Styx fan out there. It may not be in stock but the used & new prices are to good to pass up.
