String Driven Thing may have disintegrated when Chris and Pauline Adams departed, but Graham Smith didn't let that deter him. He rebuilt the band from the foundation up and shifted the focus from progressive folk to a more straight-ahead rock & roll format, a sonic sensibility helped along by vocalist Kim Beacon, whose Rod Stewart-styled vocals provided a front to the heavy-hooked guitar-driven songs. They released their debut album, 'STRING DRIVEN THING' on the Concord label in 1970. It has since been reissued on CD by the band with 16 bonus tracks. Moving to London in 1972 they signed with the hip Famous Charisma label, releasing another self-titled album, this time in a gate-fold sleeve with art by Hipgnosis. Both 'PLEASE MIND YOUR HEAD' and 'KEEP YOUR 'AND ON IT' were released on CD in 2006 by grey area label Red Fox Records. The former contains the complete second album and the latter the complete 'THE MACHINE THAT CRIED' album as bonus tracks I first became aware of the label when purchasing their WARM DUST and HOOKFOOT reissues. Two albums followed. Please Mind Your Head, recorded by engineer Tony Taverner at Escape Studios in Kent, and Keep Yer A'nd On It, produced by Andy Johns at Island's Basing Street studios. Following the release of Keep Yer A'nd On It keyboardist Derek Beauchemin joined the band after violinist Graham Smith left. After 15 years of silence, Chris Adams released a solo album, The Damage, in 1991 and subsequently reformed String Driven Thing for a German tour, the Berlin leg of which was released on Ozit as uicide, Live in Berlin
