Short intro
Igor Stravinsky. Paavo Järvi. Scherzo à la Russe, for orchestra. L' oiseau de feu The Firebird, concert suite for orchestra No. Scherzo à la russe is a composition by Russian expatriate composer Igor Stravinsky. It was initially published by Chappell & Co. in 1945 and premiered in March 1946 by the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra, conducted by the composer himself. It was later published by Boosey & Hawkes. Stravinsky had been going through economical problems since he moved to America, partially because he lost the royalties from his works in Europe and had to compose more works to exploit them in America. Listen to how the Cincinnati brass ripple and roar in the Infernal Dance, one of the more exciting versions on disc although George Szells stunning Cleveland performance remains unsurpassed for enthralling virtuosity. Järvis light and bouncy rendition of Scherzo à la Russe forms an ideal bridge between the two larger works. This is fabulous music-making, translated with unerring fidelity to your listening room. So what if its war-horse repertoire . Igor Stravinsky 1882-1957 The Firebird: Suite 1919 Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestras Symphony Orchestra Allen Tinkham, Music Director May good news first: the Cincinnati Symphony is an accomplished orchestra, and its sound is very truthfully represented in the Telarc recordings, which capture many details of Stravinsky's scoring that are so often submerged by less fastidious engineering. Far less desirable, though, is the sheer bloodlessness of the performances. Petrushka is set in the hubbub of a Shrovetide Fair, but here sounds as if it is a mild diversion at a vicarage tea party The Firebird is a fairy-tale spun out of boldly coloured Russian myth and magic, yet it is turned by Paavo Jarvi into a series of pastel-tinted tableaux.
