Tales from the Vienna Woods German: Geschichten aus dem Wienerwald, occasionally G'schichten aus dem Wienerwald is a waltz by Johann Strauss II. Composed in 1868, Geschichten aus dem Wienerwald, Op. 325, was one of six Viennese waltzes by Johann Strauss II which featured a virtuoso part for zither. The title of Strauss' dance recalls the folk music of the inhabitants of the Vienna Woods. Actually, Blue Danube and Tales from the Vienna Woods are less listenable than the former two because of their many slower sections. Vienna Woods has a slow, elongated prelude and only arrives at its main theme about 30 into the score. What were couples supposed to do when Vienna Woods was performed. Willi Boskovsky was born in Vienna. He, and the great Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra of which he served as concertmaster for forty years, thoroughly assimilated the essence of the Strauss idiom.
