Album Summary. Strauss, Richard : Cäcilie Wenn du es wüsstest, song for voice & piano or orchestra, Op. Gramophone Magazine, Gramophone 2017 Nicky Spence is superb. The voice has recently grown to encompass more heroic roles and we hear that in this selection, in the bright, lively tone and ringing top. He deals heroically with Strauss's more outrageous demands and, perhaps more importantly, he has just the right interpretative keenness and enthusiasm to put a persuasive case for everything he sings here. Nicky Spence tenor, Rebecca Evans soprano, Roger Vignoles piano Hyperion. Richard Strauss at the piano. This is the last in this superb series, devised by Roger Vignoles, of all Richard Strausss 174 songs for voice and piano. Those for voice and orchestra were excluded until now. Vignoles argues the case for including the Vier letze Lieder, the composers famous farewell to life, in the piano transcription by Max Wolff and only Im Abendrot Ernst Roth. Strausss piano writing is already rich with orchestral colours, explored, relished, teased out wonderfully by Vignoles. GB2017-07-28. Hyperion UK classical. CDA68185. Digital Media. This magnificent CD is a fitting finale to Hyperion's complete Strauss songs series. Nicky Spence is in fine 'heldentenor' form and delivers all of his songs, well known and less-known, with conviction. Rebecca Evans gives a lovely rendition of the piano accompanied Four Last Songs so different in effect from the orchestral version which certainly matches and perhaps surpasses the earlier recording of this version by Barbara Bonney, much as I love her voice. Evans weaves a special magic in the dying falls, with magnificent breath control at the end of 'September'. Gold, though, goes to Nicky Spence and Roger Vignoles, making a remarkable statement.
