Short intro

Music for 18 Musicians is a work of musical minimalism composed by Steve Reich during 19741976. Its world premiere was on April 24, 1976, at The Town Hall in New York City. Following this, a recording of the piece was released by ECM New Series in 1978. In his introduction to the score, Reich mentions that although the piece is named Music for 18 Musicians, it is not necessarily advisable to perform the piece with that few players due to the extensive doubling it requires. Performance of Music for 18 at Temple University in Philadelphia, PA on April 5, 2016 Temple Performing Arts Center. Players from Temple for 18 Musicians is approximately 55 minutes long. The first sketches were made for it in May 1974 and it was completed in March 1976. Although its steady pulse and rhythmic energy relate to many of my earlier works, its instrumentation, structure and harmony are new. As to instrumentation, Music for 18 Musicians is new in the number and distribution of instruments: violin, cello, 2 clarinets doubling bass clarinet, 4 women's voices, 4 pianos, 3 marimbas, 2 xylophones and metallophone vibraphone with no motor. All instruments are acoustical. The use of electronics is limited to mi. Album 1998 14 Songs. Music for 18 Musicians: IV. Section IIIA. Steve Reich. Music for 18 Musicians: V. Section IIIB. When Erik Hall undertook his painstaking reconstruction of Steve Reichs 1976 masterpiece of minimalism, Music for Eighteen Musicians , it was as much an exercise in modesty as ambition. With its repetitions and complex constructions, the piece makes great demands on stamina and concentration, and Reich himself advised that these challenges meant it should probably be performed with more than eighteen musicians. HAL1989 Steve Reich's acoustic masterpiece revised in a little distorted sound. If you've known Steve Reich, you MUST LISTEN to this. If you haven't known Steve Reich, you MUST DIG Steve Reich starting from this album. John Shaeffer. Music For 18 Musicians is ranked 568th in the overall chart, 134th in the 1970s, and 10th in the year 1978. This album is rated in the top 1 of all albums on

This is a great recording which sounds terrific on vinyl but the pressing (of my copy at least) is highly unsatisfying. Clicks and pops and rasping sounds even after a deep clean. What a pity. I thought this was supposed to be some fancy pressing plant? They trumpet it in the sticker.

Saw this yesterday in my local record store and did a jaw drop double take. Is this pressing worth it? I'd love to get it without having to get an original if it's worth it. I know I know, originals are always better, but for someone who's not in the realm of having a lot of disposable income, does this suffice?

Hope you jumped at it. Some folks like to complain that the record shouldn't be split between two LP's and I couldn't disagree more. There's an incredible depth to the quality of this release.

Bad pressing. Clicking throughout album. Should never have been released in this state.

I'm curious to know what Nonesuch have against the British/Europeans? This was pressed in Germany yet is selling for $25-30 in USA, EU40-50 in Europe and £50+ in UK (I ended up buying one from Japan for about £35 inclusive of shipping kind of making it Japanese Record Store Day).

Good observation. I'll bet Nonesuch explain it as something like, "We have to cover import costs to ship it back to Europe" - despite it being pressed here. ie. They don't have a formal distribution arrangement in the EU so any movement is at a premium. Nice touch snagging a copy in Japan. Hopefully, the postal service where you are didn't pay too much attention.

Does anyone else have some major quality issues on side B? There's one section in particular that distorts with virtually every audio spike.
