The double-disc set The Mercury Years is a comprehensive overview of Spirit's late-'70s recordings for Mercury Records, containing nearly all of their 1975 album Spirit of '76, plus highlights from Farther Along 1976, Son of Spirit 1976 and Future Games 1977. Though this music isn't among the band's best, it's occasionally intriguing, and for dedicated fans of Spirit's '60s albums, this compilation is the best way to appreciate their late '70s work. Randy California and Ed Cassidy however decided to give it another go. They resurrected the band name and self funded their comeback album Spirit of '76, intended as part of the American bicentennial celebrations. Mercury Records picked up the band and further albums were recorded and released over the next couple of years. This compilation is a fine document of those later years. It contains Spirit of '. Spirit of '76, released in May 1975, was the first of four albums that Spirit would initially release for Mercury Records. Though all four albums were greatly influenced by the time that Randy California spent living in Hawaii, this album bears that influence more than any of the others aside from maybe Future Games. Farther Along was pretty much my first album where I started to like Post Golden 4 Spirit and Randy California. The I got Future Games and I was all in. The last piece of the puzzle was Spirit Of 76 and that release grew on me as well. So, this set has far too many good things to list, music alone.
