Thelonious Monk and Sonny Rollins is a compilation album by jazz pianist and composer Thelonious Monk and saxophonist Sonny Rollins released in 1956 by Prestige Records. The material on it was recorded in three sessions between 1953 and 1954. While this is its original title, and its most consistent title in its digital re-releases, it was also released on Prestige as Work 1959, PRLP 7169and The Genius Of Thelonious Monk 1967, PR 7656, with alternate covers. This disc contains an all-star cast headed up by Thelonious Monk piano and includes some collaborative efforts with Sonny Rollins tenor sax that go beyond simply inspired and into a realm of musical telepathy. The five tunes included on Work are derived from three separate sessions held between November of 1953 and September of the following year. As is often the case, this likewise means that there are three distinct groups of musicians featured. Songs in album Thelonious Monk & Sonny Rollins 1954. Thelonious Monk created some of his most innovative music during the period in the early '50s when he recorded for Prestige, and Sonny Rollins was in the forefront of the few musicians who could respond to Monk's challenging compositions and sharp-angled, dissonant comping. It's apparent in the way the two transform the standards The Way You Look Tonight and I Want to Be Happy, Rollins soaring through the former and bringing wry wit to the latter. Monk's Friday the 13th is heard in an extended performance with Rollins and French-horn play. Thelonious Monk & Sonny Rollins Q&A. More Thelonious Monk albums. We See. More Genius of Thelonious Monk.
