The title and the design of the distinctive packaging was a parody of Ogdens Nut-brown Flake, a brand of tobacco that was produced in Liverpool from 1899 onwards by Thomas Ogden. In 2000 Q magazine placed Ogdens' Nut Gone Flake at 59 in its list of the 100 Greatest British Albums Ever. The album was featured in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.
