The Symphony No. 5 in D minor, Op. 47, by Dmitri Shostakovich is a work for orchestra composed between April and July 1937. Its first performance was on November 21, 1937, in Leningrad by the Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra under Yevgeny Mravinsky. The premiere was a huge success and received an ovation that lasted well over half an hour. The symphony is approximately 45 minutes in length and has four movements: Moderato Allegro non troppo D minor. The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, renowned the world over for its strident and stalwart performances of western classical music, has tried its hand, this time, with their instrumental versions of various well-known rock and blues tracks, performed originally with vocals, by such well-known artists as Norah Jones, Bono of U2 etc. Overall, one can safely say that this cd set provides pleasing, soft background music - useful when entertaining guests or just whilst working or while reading, before nodding off to sleep.
