Notes
Live of the 13th Symphony, uncensored, recorded at the large hall of the Moscow conservatory on December 20, 1962 — Just two days after the World Première (December 18, 1962). The poem in the first movement ("Babi Yar") was banned after this second concert. The poet, Yevgeny Yevtushenko, had been compelled to make some modifications to it. Then Shostakovich, reluctantly, adapted the new, watered-down text, to the music. The new text was approved, but even that couldn't help. Public concerts of the 13th Symphony in Russia were few and far between, even with the modified poem.Barcodes

Symphony No. 13 in B-Flat Minor for Bass, Chorus & Orchestra, Op. 113, Babi-Yar: III. In The Store. Adagio, Pt. Dmitri Shostakovichs Symphony No. 13 in B-flat minor Op. 113, subtitled Babi Yar, was completed on July 20, 1962, and first performed in Moscow in December of that year. The hour-long work requires a bass soloist, men's chorus, and large orchestra and is laid out in five movements, each a setting of a Yevgeny Yevtushenko poem. This unusual form gives rise to various descriptions: choral symphony, song cycle, giant cantata. The five earthily vernacular poems denounce Soviet life one aspect at a time. Composer: Dmitri Dmitriyevich Shostakovich 25 September 1906 9 August 1975 -Text: Yevgeny Aleksandrovich Yevtushenko -Bass: Sergei Aleksashkin : Symphony No. 1962 year. Download example: Form: 1. In the spring of 1962, the composer finished his one-movement composition to Yevtushenkos words: Symphonic Poem Babi Yar for Bass, Bass Choir, and Orchestra, Op. The rough draft was finished on 23 March 1962, the piano score on 27 March, and the orchestral score on 21 April, but by this time the idea for the composition had expanded. The composer wanted to put a few more of Yevtushenkos poems to music, in addition to Babi Yar. Dmitri Dmitriyevich Shostakovich 25 September 1906 9 August 1975 was a Russian composer of the Soviet period and one of the most celebrated composers of the 20th century. Shostakovich achieved fame in the Soviet Union under the patronage of Leon Trotsky's chief of staff Mikhail Tukhachevsky, but later had a complex and difficult relationship with the Stalinist bureaucracy. His music was officially denounced twice, in 1936 and 1948, and was periodically banned. Yet he also received accolades and state awards and served in the Supreme Soviet of RSFSR. Despite the official co read more. The cycle of Shostakovich symphonies from Britain's Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra under Russian conductor Vasily Petrenko has been widely praised, and this version of one of the composer's sharpest-edged works of protest will not disrupt the general trend. Here, as elsewhere, the reading is a sort of combination of British and Russian elements. Sviatoslav Richter, London Symphony Orchestra, Kirill Kondrashin 2. This new live recording poignantly reunites work and conductor, who this time leads the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, bass soloist Alexey Tikhomirov, and male choir-all in electrifying form. Shostakovichs settings of five poems by Yevgeny Yevtushenko-including the opening lament for the 34,000 Jews murdered in 1941 by the Nazis at Babi Yar-are dark and brutalRelated to Shostakovich - Symphony No. 13 "Babi Yar" For Bass, Chorus And Orchestra Op.113
