The Piano Trio No. 2 in E minor, for violin, cello and piano, Op. 67, by Dmitri Shostakovich was written in 1944, during World War II. The composition was dedicated to Shostakovich's good friend, Ivan Sollertinsky, a Russian polymath and avid musician, who had recently died aged 41. The mere dynamics are too grand for domesticity the second piano trio begins with an almost subliminal pianissimo on the cello but builds to a crashing fortissimo that is sustained through most of the four movements. It's too showy for anyone's living room. It demands the full dynamics of a Steinway or Bosendorfer, and therefore the technical virtuosity of a modern string instrument to hold its own in such an uproar. No modest cellist or violinist need apply. Modest, timid, withheld timbres were never the style of the Beaux Arts Trio. Piano Quintet in G minor, op. Lento - Poco più mosso - Lento. An earlier piano trio, written in 1923, comes nowhere near the intensity of its younger brother. To me, in purely musical terms and leaving aside for the moment the considerable emotion in these works, Shostakovich's chamber music seems about finding a sharper vocabulary of musical images, figures, and gestures than the composer permitted himself in the early symphonies and, indeed, allowed into the symphonic work only from about the first violin concerto on. The Beaux Arts play even better than in the Quintet. They meet the trio's greater emotional demands, and it is withal a performance of equals
