This was the debut film for Shiv - Hari as music directors. Both were already famous Hindustani classical musicians - Shivkumar Sharma played the santoor and Hariprasad Chaurasia was a flautist. Javed Akhtar started his career as a lyricist in this film. Before this film, he was mainly known as one half of the scriptwriter duo of Salim - Javed. To a large extent, Silsila was a celebration of poetry and life. Each of its songs rates high in the overall history of Bollywood music and signifies the third musical wave at its peak. While songs like Dekha Ek Khwab, Yeh Kahan Aa Gaye Hum, and Neela Aasmaan So Gaya were romantic ballads bathed with poetry, Sar Se Sarke Chunariyan and Rang Barse were celebrations of life. Shiv-Hari refers to the Indian music director duo of Shivkumar Sharma, a Santoor player, and Hariprasad Chaurasia, a flutist. The duo has worked on Indian classical music pieces as well as Indian movie scores. As early as 1967, Shiv-Hari went on to record the album titled Call of the Valley. With the active participation of guitarist Brij Bhushan Kabra and the unusual way in which this Indian classical music album was organized, the result was a fresh, edgy, and slightly controversial form of music.
