The Club Scam EP was originally released in 1993 and lead track That's What I Want is based around an inspired chopped up vocal sample lifted from the B-52's 1982 underground hit Mesopotamia used here to devastating effect across 2 different mixes and featuring Shake's trademark Garage-like skippy drum programming. The Ying & Yang and My Mantra are much deeper affairs, 2 variations of the same track building slowly into cascades of insistent drum programming and futuristic Detroit pads while retaining enough bounce. The Club Scam EP was first released way back in 1993, before Anthony 'Shake' Shakir had established himself as one of Detroit techno's most unique voices. In fact, the EP is most notable for the bumpin' deep house style - an amalgamation of Chicago, New York and New Jersey influences - that dominates. It's interesting that Shakir quickly moved away from this style, as all four tracks here - freshly re-mastered and reissued - still sound great. Of course, there are some Motor City touches - see the razor-sharp synth strings on The Ying & Yang Frictional Mix&.
