Defend Yourself is the eighth studio album by American indie rock band Sebadoh. It is the band's first album in fourteen years, since 1999's The Sebadoh. The album was released on September 16, 2013 via Domino in the United Kingdom and on September 17, 2013 via Joyful Noise in the United States, respectively. In the words of Lou Barlow, We were always going to make another record. There was never any point where we looked at each other and said, 'That's it. We're done. We never actually quit at all- we've been maki. Years later, Sebadoh has reemerged with Defend Yourself, an album that's better defined than many of its earlier, looser works. Barlow handles most of the songs, with Jason Loewenstein his only foil. Eric Gaffney and Bob Fay werent brought back. The breakup of Barlows 25-year marriage has surely added some psychic weight, and songs like Love You Here, State of Mine, Listen, and Let It Out ache with earnest pop melodies. The buzzing electricity of Beat, Defend Yr. Self, Final Days, Separate, and the bizarre cowpunk of Inquiries fill out the expectations for. bassist Lou. Following a 14-year dormancy since 1999's lackluster The Sebadoh, Defend Yourself revitalizes the project with surprisingly few huge changes. Barlow's most serious tunes are still marked by his signature ache, this time informed by the breakup of his 25-year marriage. Songs like the tormented pop of Oxygen wouldn't even have sounded that futuristic when Dinosaur Jr. was still called Dinosaur and began making records for Homestead in the mid-'80s. For Defend Yourself, he's joined again by Loewenstein and ex-Fiery Furnaces drummer Bob D'Amico, who came on board in 2012, replacing replacement drummer Russ Pollard. As on past Sebadoh records, Barlow's material remains the real focus, though he seems oddly distant. Even when he's singing about subject matter as intimate as the fear and pain of watching kids grow up and say goodbye on the catchy State of Mine, there's not much of a spark beyond the bounce of the backing music.
