Scott 4 is Scott Walker's fifth solo album a collection of songs he had performed for his BBC television series had been his fourth. It was originally released in late 1969 under his birth name, Scott Engel, and failed to chart. Subsequent reissues have been released under his stage name. It has since received praise as one of Walker's best works. Scott 4 was the first Walker album to consist solely of self-penned songs. It is also the first and only album in his first musical period to be completely made up of original material. It is said due to the original release of the album having Scott's real name, Noel Scott Engel, on the spine and cover, consumers were confused as to who the artist actually was, and the album was a commercial failure. Walker dropped out of the British Top Ten with his fourth album, but the result was probably his finest '60s LP. While the tension between the bloated production and his introspective, ambitious lyrics remains, much of the over-the-top bombast of the orchestral arrangements has been reined in, leaving a relatively stripped-down approach that complements his songs rather than smothering them. This is the first Walker album to feature entirely original material, and his songwriting is more lucid and cutting. Scott was the début solo album by Scott Walker, originally released in the United Kingdom on Philips Records in 1967. The album received both strong commercial success as well as critical praise, hitting No. 3 on the UK Albums Chart. This album, alongside Scott 2, features Phil Spector's Wall of Sound recording technique. Scott was released only six months after Walker's third album with The Walker Brothers, Images.
