Joshua Rifkin has been closely associated with the music of Scott Joplin ever since his release of three LPs on Nonesuch in the early '70s, though later that decade he also recorded a selection of the best-known rags for EMI. The later recordings appear on this compilation, and the grace and intelligence Rifkin brought to his earlier interpretations hold him in good stead here. This is a combination of two Joplin recordings, and the Rifkin stuff is from Digital Ragtime. As the name suggests, this is one of those early digital era recordings. The sound isn't as rich, true, but these are different interpretations a decade down the road and are interesting to listen to as such. One album was all it took to herald a revival. In 1970, the year of Simon & Garfunkel's Bridge Over Troubled Water and The Beatles' Let It Be, a record of arcane late 19th-century American piano music, released on a label that was otherwise building its reputation as a chronicler of the hardcore American avant-garde, began to sell in implausible quantities. The letter of a Joplin score must be obeyed. Rifkin's intuition has long since been vindicated, although questions remain about where ragtime stands historically in relation to jazz.
