This is by some margin the best cycle of Schubert symphonies I've heard. I have always liked the Colin Davis versions with the same orchestra of a later vintage But this surpasses Davis, with the 9th,5th and 6th more characterful. The Davis 9th goes on for ages in a fairly heavy tread while Blomstedt's is lithe without sacrificing that wonderful string tone.
