Contours is the second album by American saxophonist Sam Rivers recorded in 1965 and released on the Blue Note label. The CD reissue contains an alternate take as a bonus track. Rarely is Contours anything less than. On Contours, his second Blue Note album, tenor saxophonist Sam Rivers fully embraced the avant-garde, but presented his music in a way that wouldn't be upsetting or confusing to hard bop loyalists. Rivers leads a quintet featuring trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, pianist Herbie Hancock, bassist Ron Carter, and drummer Joe Chambers through a set of originals that walk a fine line between probing, contemplative post-bop and densely dissonant avant-jazz. Though it was recorded on Friday, 21 May 1965, Sam Rivers second Blue Note LP, Contours, didnt get a commercial release until two years later, in 1967. An overlooked gem in the Oklahoma-born reedmans canon, this classic jazz album has now been reissued as part of Blue Notes new connoisseur LP line, Tone Poet Audiophile Vinyl Series. Just after that albums release, in May 1965 Lion booked Rivers for a follow-up session for Blue Note at Rudy Van Gelders Englewood Cliffs studio for what would become Contours. Streams' is a live album by American jazz saxophonist Sam Rivers, featuring performances recorded at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1973 for the Impulse Records label.
