This album is just great by itself, but also pressing quality, dynamics and grooviness, which make me toe-tap. This is one of the best sounding LPs I got for sure. I honestly do not know why it is so underrated...

While other tracks secured this album’s number one slot in the UK, it was the Wilson Pickett cover of “In The Midnight Hour,” along with “Eight Miles High” by The Byrds that placed Flesh + Blood on the charts for nearly sixty weeks back in the spring of 1980. That of course stands in stark contrast to what many music critics were saying. Ken Tucker for Rolling Stone Magazine blasted, “Flesh + Blood is such a shockingly bad Roxy Music record that it provokes a certain fascination … while Stephen Erlewine fanatically states, “Even with the handful of undeniably strong moments, one can’t erase the sinking feeling that Roxy Music has begun running out of ideas.” So much for the critics, who couldn’t fathom or respect the four singles the album wasted the world with.

I on the other hand, thought that the outing was rather ambitious for the group, building the album around these two classic hits, yet managing to change them in such a manner that the songs come off as if Roxy had penned them themselves, both filled with swagger, enlightenment and a flamboyant manifestation of the etherial, sounding timeless, as if they’d been beaming in from another side of the galaxy, creating what can simply be considered to be modern standards.

Of course by this time Roxy music were a threesome, with only Brian Ferry, Phil Manzanera and Andy MacKay left from the original lineup, but that was the core, the essence of Roxy Music, onto which all Roxy songs were based and given life. Of course Eno brought a charm to the band, yet Eno was a distraction in many ways as well, as Eno was set on explorative experimentation, while the rest of the members were set on creating shimmering pop songs that took a decisive turn to the more exotic.

Yes, Flesh + Blood is filled with varied styles, emotions and deliveries, where again we see a band on the cusp of something no one other than perhaps Bowie had down when he stepped into his Young Americans phase, though unlike Bowie, this elegant grace and persona was something Ferry deeply embraced, though unlike Bowie, Ferry was attempting to remake, if not remodel his stage character into the persona he was presenting on stage. And like counterparts Fagen and Becker of Steely Dan, Roxy music were on a headlong adventure to becoming the Dukes of smooth, which was one hundred and eighty degrees from where the band had begun. Nevertheless, I found this to be a very attractive place to be, especially with all of the unfettered noise that was filling the airways at the time with their delivery of post modern pop singles.

Ferry has been ever-inching toward music that shines with a greater patina, glistening with perfection and sonic professionalism, where vocals are crooned, evocative of something faded, half forgotten, and perhaps with a splash of jaded gentility, creating immaculate background music that for this listener, existed front and center, bigger than life, resoundingly full bodied, filled with nothing but intoxicating pleasure … and triumphant in that Mr. Ferry attained his dream, though dreams once realized tend to dissipate rather quickly.

Taking a step forward, and considering the solo Ferry albums, I was surprised that he did so, after all, Roxy Music was his baby, he formed the group, calibrated the overall vision and structure, developed its artistic scope, so why was he intent on breaking up with himself, as he held the direction strings.

*** The Fun Facts: Again beautiful women grace the album jacket, models Roslyn Bolton, Shelly Mann and Aimee Stephenson, this was the first album jacket created without any input from Brian Ferry.
