It's a brilliant enough album that she doesn't need her association with Mark Ronson be the first thing people talk about, either. Her first album under her own name, 2010's Without Why, was good, sometimes even great, but this one positions her as a force to be reckoned with on the modern pop scene. Teaming with Boxed In's Oli Bayston, the duo have crafted a. Rose Elinor Dougall 'Stellular' LP now available to purchase from Rough Trade in store and online. After a near seven-year gap between releases hey, its hardly The Stone Roses, Rose Elinor Dougalls second album is an unexpected treasure. Much of her recent time may have been spent as vocalist for Mark Ronson's touring band, but Stellular - her first solo record since 2010s Without Why - strikes a balance between indie cred and pop nous brilliantly. The record hopscotches its way over two distinct sonic landscapes. Bandmate Rose Elinor Dougall, meanwhile has quietly released several albums and EPs worth of lovelorn pop music. The comparison is inevitable-both artists work in more or less the same vein of synthpop-but where Gwenno prefers futurism, Dougall prefers romanticism. Stellular, produced with Oli Bayston of Boxed In who also sings on and co-wrote Dive is not a departure from her past solo work-if youve heard any of the EPs, you know what to expect, and even if you havent, you can venture a guess. Dougall is a Pipettes alum pastiche is expected. Elinor Dougall has obviously taken her time to get this album sounding just as she wants Strange Warnings and Poison Ivy first appeared on 2013s Future Vanishes EP and, on the majority of these cuts, that time has been unquestionably well spent. It doesnt all work. Stellular finishes strong, however. Read full review
