Big Tings Gwidarn New Second Hand is the first studio album by English hip hop musician Roots Manuva. It was released on Big Dada in 1999. Paul Cooper of Pitchfork gave the album a 9. 5 out of 10, saying, I find Roots Manuva's delivery addictive, compelling, and, above all, heartfelt. In 2014, Oscar Rickett of Vice said, It's hard to believe it's been 15 years since this album was made. He added, It's easier to believe that nothing as good as it has ever come out of the UK hip-hop scene. Brand New Second Hand. A bright moment for British rap, the debut album from Roots Manuva introduced a hip-hop chameleon boasting dark productions and a distinct style, plus much more to say than most rappers. Both his raps and his productions rely on ragga as a bed, but instead of leading the party, Roots Manuva used it to reflect on the world Strange Behaviour and his religious background Baptism, as well as play the usual game of the dozens Dem Phonies. From the political critiques of Juggle Tings Proper or Soul Decay, to the narratives of Inna and Strange Behaviour there is little in the way of filler. Even the dubby sketches of the middle section have their place in a debut album that is pretty much peerless in UK rap. The year was 1999 and this was a call for new movements, in distinctively British dub-hiphop, drawing on soundsystem culture, Pentecostal church preaching and the anti-cap.
