He was tutored by his grandfather, Lawrence Denton, also a renowned clarinetist and composer. At the age of 14 he formed a vocal group and produced his first vinyl as Roland Young and the Velveteers. The year afterwards he formed a free improvisationjazz woodwind trio. Young was on clarinet and two then highschool classmates played on alto and baritone saxophones.
