Volunteered Slavery, with its beatAfrican chanted poetry and post-bop blues ethos was certainly the first strike in the right direction. With a band that included Charles McGhee on trumpet, Dick Griffin on trombone, organist Mickey Tucker, bassist Vernon Martin, drummers Jimmy Hopps and Charles Grady, as well as Sony Brown, Kirk made it work. Volunteered Slavery is an album by jazz multi-instrumentalist Roland Kirk featuring his 1968 Newport Jazz Festival appearance and studio performances recorded in July 1969. It was released on the Atlantic label and features performances by Kirk with Ron Burton, Vernon Martin, Jimmy Hopps and Joe Habao Texidor, Charles McGhee, Dick Griffith, Sonny Brown, Charles Crosby and the Roland Kirk Spirit Choir. A mix of live recordings from 1968's Newport Jazz Festival and New York studio recordings made later that same month, Volunteered Slavery shows Rahsaan Roland Kirk being propelled by the energy of the late '60s toward a moment of ecstatic liberation. The title song epitomizes Kirks irrepressible personality. It starts as a funky vamp, while the band chants: Volunteered slavery has got me on the runVolunteered slavery has got me havin fun. As the band picks up steam, Kirk hollers over it: If you wanna know how it is to be free, you got to spend all day in bed with ME .
