Richard Dyer-Bennet's road to Stockholm and Scholander began in Leicester, England, where he was born October 6, 1913. His father, Richard Stewart Dyer-Bennet, was an officer in the British army. Scholander had told him that the only way to learn the art of minstrelsy is to sing to the people, feel their response, and make them believe in what you are singing. Dyer-Bennet recounted his trip to Stockholm for Hurok, who was duly impressed by the singer's determination and obvious love for his work.
