Notes

Pre-Residents private tape. All recordings from September 1970 to May 1971.

"The tape was originally mailed to Hal Haverstadt, of Warner Brothers Records, in a bold attempt by the anonymous group to secure a recording contract with the company. Mr Haverstadt mailed the tape back months later with a short rejection notice (adressed to "Residents" - hence the group's name) but he also noted that the mysterious artists at least deserved an A for originality.
The Warner Bros. Album contains approximately 40 minutes of short songs, recorded only on reel-to-reel tape. Complete front and back artwork, and strange liner notes were designed for the tape box, even though the music was never been released in any form. A rare copy of the tape was played in its entirely on KBOO-FM (Portland, Oregon) during a 1977 Residents Radio Festival."
(note taken from The Cryptic Guide To The Residents, compiled and edited by Dave Warden in 1986).

In 2004, The Residents produced an album of remixes from most of the tracks of this tape: WB:RMX.

Short intro

The Warner Bros. One of the group's earliest known recordings, The Warner Bros. Album was compiled as a demo reel to showcase their talents, and was sent anonymously to Hal Halverstadt, the executive who signed Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band to Warner Bros. The first known public performance of the band who became The Residents was at the Boarding House in San Francisco in 1971. To promote the album, The Residents purchased 40 one-minute advertising slots on San Francisco's most popular Top-40 radio station at the time, KFRC, such that the station played each track of their album over three days. Album is a demo tape, recorded in 1971 by the group who would later become known as The Residents. It was compiled and sent to Hal Halverstadt, the executive who signed Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band to Warner Bros. Like their other recordings from between 1967 and 1972, The Warner Bros. Album is not considered by The Residents to be part of their official discography. It was very hard to get a right tracklist, and I'm not even sure if this is a correct one. If anyone can find a better one, tell me. Strawberry Warner Bros. Album was the group's first demo tape. They mailed it anonymously they didn't have a name yet to Harve Halverstadt at Warner Brothers. Halverstadt was chosen because he had worked with Captain Beefheart, one of the group's musical heroes. The tape was returned with a rejection addressed to Residents, 20 Sycamore St. San Francisco. The Residents maintain that Halverstadt made the right decision, because the album sucked, but its place in Residential history is assured because of the role it played in the naming of the band. It wasn't until 2004 that there was an official release, albeit in the heavily altered form of WB:RMX.
