Pete Kelly's Blues is a 1955 musical-crime film based on the 1951 radio series. It was directed by and starred Jack Webb in the title role of a bandleader and musician. Janet Leigh is featured as party girl Ivy Conrad, and Edmond O'Brien as a gangster who applies pressure to Kelly. Peggy Lee portrays alcoholic jazz singer Rose Hopkins a performance for which she received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress in a Supporting Role. Ella Fitzgerald makes a cameo as singer Maggie Jackson a. Ray Anthony's recording of title song from 1955 film Pete Kelly's Blues. Composed by Ray Heindorf, lyrics by Sammy Cahn. My favorite record when I was Kelly's Blues, DC-7 from Ray Anthony 7inch. This obscure LP features the Dixieland tunes that were utilized in the Jack Webb Hollywood movie Pete Kelly's Blues. Although four songs which are given rather sappy treatment feature Ray Heindorf directing the Warner Bros. Orchestra, most of the other performances are not from the film's soundtrack. Peggy Lee and Ella Fitzgerald sang in the movie but are not on this album. However, the same hot combo from the movie and one that would soon have an independent life is featured on eight numbers. The background of the Prohibition Era of Tom Pendergast's Kansas City in the Twenties at its height is the setting for the story of Pete Kelly's Blues. Jack Webb's crisp documentary like style honed by years of doing Dragnet on television is the manner in which Pete Kelly's story of resistance to the mob is told. All Webb in the title role wants to do is play jazz, but playing jazz in mobbed up Kansas City came at a price. The one who wants the payoff is political ward bossgangster Edmond O'BrienRelated to Ray Anthony - Pete Kelly's Blues / DC-7
