Common People is a song by English alternative rock band Pulp, released in May 1995 as the lead single off their fifth studio album Different Class. It reached number two on the UK Singles Chart, becoming a defining track of the Britpop movement and Pulp's signature song in the process. In 2014, BBC Radio 6 Music listeners voted it their favourite Britpop song in an online poll. In a 2015 Rolling Stone readers' poll it was voted the greatest Britpop song. It was released as a single in 1995, reaching number two on the UK singles chart. It also appears on the band's 1995 album Different Class. The song is about those who were perceived by the songwriter as wanting to be like common people and who ascribe glamour to poverty. This phenomenon is commonly referred to as slumming or class tourism. A similar theme is explored in the 1960's novel and film Up The Junction. Pulp's Common People, the researchers went through all the people who were contemporaries of mine at St Martins and they tried to track her down. They showed me a picture and it definitely wasn't her. I dunno. Pulp debuted this at the Reading Festival in 1994. Jarvis Cocker recalled in Isle of Noises: I was up trying to finish the words the night before. If a song doesn't work you know after about 20 seconds but you've got to finish it, five minutes or whatever, then feel really embarrassed. In the end we forced Island to release 'Common People' as a single before the rest of the album was done. The other eight songs were done while 'Common People' was in the Top 10.
