Short intro

Batman is the eleventh studio album by American recording artist Prince and the soundtrack album to the 1989 film Batman. It was released on June 20, 1989 by Warner Bros. As a Warner Bros. stablemate, Prince's involvement in the soundtrack was designed to leverage the media company's contract-bound talent as well as fulfill the artist's need for a commercial revival. The result was yet another multi-platinum successful cross-media enterprise by Warner Bros. in the vein of Purple Rain. Prince was a lifelong fan of the comic book character Batman. So when the director Tim Burton contacted Prince to ask if he could use two of his singles, 1999 and Baby, Im a Star, for his new movie, Batman, Prince didnt just sign off on the idea within a few weeks he was on set with Burton watching rough cu. Batman film director Tim Burton used Prince hits 1999 and Baby, Im A Star as a placeholder during early post-production, and liked their inclusion so much that he personally contacted Prince to use them. It wasnt until January 1989 when visiting the setstudio for Batman that Prince decided to contribute to the soundtrack, but decided to re-record new material instead. Prince was so interested in taking up a part in the film that he considered cancelling part of the Lovesexy tour. It has also been speculated that Prince was to record the darker half of the soundtrack, while Michael Jac. Prince had stumbled commercially with Lovesexy, which may be one of the reasons he decided to record the soundtrack for Tim Burton's dark, gothic interpretation of the DC comic Batman. Reportedly, the Batman album was recorded quickly, and it shows in the loose, offhand nature of the songs, which actually comes as some relief after the big ambitions of all of his records since 1999.
