Short intro
Preoccupations is the second studio album by Canadian rock band Preoccupations, released on September 16, 2016, by Flemish Eye in Canada and Jagjaguwar in the United States. It was the band's first album released under this name, after changing it from Viet Cong in 2015. The album was preceded by the singles Anxiety, Degraded and Memory. Fever When the four members of Preoccupations wrote and recorded their new record, they were in a state of near total instability. Years-long relationships ended they left homes behind. On their first album as Preoccupations, they live up to their moniker to an almost scary degree, sounding engrossed in thought to the point of pathological obsession. With a sense of urgency and uneaseSecond guessing just about everything sings Matt Flegel to open the album, in a song called Anxiety. Internal stress marks every track, in phrases like spinning in a vacuum, falling into mania, so close to exhaustion, overwhelmed, and its coming from all angles. What makes Preoccupations much more than a circular exercise in self-analysis is the vitality of the music. Theres a tense, nervous energy running through all the tracks, which connect to each other like wires that spark electrical currents when they meet. The same could be said of the bands self-titled album as Viet Cong, which also crackled with highly-concentrated vigor. For my 628th review, I dig into controversial name changes and the second self-titled album from the Canadian band formerly known as Viet Cong. Like their previous name, the nervy juxtapositions of sounds and attitudes on their previous album sometimes felt like they were trying a little too hard it may be coincidence, but as Preoccupations, they're less frenetic and more determined. Both Viet Cong and this album feature 11-minute showcases for the strengths of their respective incarnations. Death was equally taut and bludgeoning, a ferocious, at times bewildering, testament to Viet Cong's nimble shifts and sheer enduranceRelated to Preoccupations - Preoccupations
