Just a perfect example of late 1980s indie/alternative before grunge came along to reframe all of these hardworking rock groups that toured nonstop through the 80s. Popdefect's debut album "Live With This" is full of yearning, a sublimated anger at commercialism in a chaotic world, and a thoughtfully constructed mix of haunted, melancholic spy rock / surf riffs, punchy post-punk gait, and spare existential howls. Having toured essentially without a break since the early 1980s, Popdefect were a well-oiled machine by 1988, and their sound was purely their own, boiled down and crystalized into a distinct voice. If you have to own one album by them, this might well be it (...though "Punch Drunk" is nearly its equal.) I always thought that the cover art of this album might be confusing to the hardcore and punk crowd, it gives off far more of that sort of vibe than the music that's contained on the album. But I really enjoy the statement made by the cover when combined with "Live With This"'s melancholy chords.
