Short intro

Between the Jigs and the Reels: A Retrospective is a two-disc anthology by the Irish folk band Planxty. It includes a 17-track CD and a 36-track DVD with over two hours of previously unreleased footage 19721982 from RTÉ archives. All but two tracks are re-released from the following albums: Planxty 1973 tracks: 3, 4, 12, 15, The Well Below the Valley 1973 tracks: 2, 11, Cold Blow and the Rainy Night 1974 track 5, After the Break 1979 tracks: 7, 10, 14. Although Planxty is nominally the first album by the band, all four members performed together on Christy Moore's previous album Prosperous, which opened with the same track, Raggle Taggle GypsyTabhair dom do Lámh. An earlier recording of Sí Bheag, Sí Mhór had been included as a b-side to Planxty's first single, Three Drunken Maidens. Between the Jigs and the Reels: A Retrospective. PlanxtyLive 2004 DVD. The pressing facility in question is called Dublin Vinyl, . I was particularly taken by the sheer quietness of the records which are on a par with the best Japanese and German vinyl records, on 3 sides. I did notice a few clicks and pops on Side 4 but hopefully these will 'go away' with regular play. This is a very creditworthy effort by a new pressing facility, located in Dublin, Ireland. The pressing facility in question is called Dublin Vinyl, www.dublinvinyl.com. I was particularly taken by the sheer quietness of the records which are on a par with the best Japanese and German vinyl records, on 3 sides. I did notice a few clicks and pops on Side 4 but hopefully these will 'go away' with regular play. The records in question were both wet cleaned (VPI-HW17F) using an Enzyme based cleaning agent followed up by Ultrasonic cleaning on a Klaudio KD-CLN-LP200 machine, before they were played.

Unfortunately, my records were quite noticeably 'off centre' but I managed to fix that issue. It is likely that the paper of the centre labels extended over the spindle hole and this may have been the cause of the eccentricity. My records now rotate and play concentrically without any visible impairment of the spindle holes, whatsoever. When this issue occurs, it tends to affect all of the pressings manufactured on that particular pressing machine/stamper so it may not be a 'one off' issue. It can be fixed, so do not despair if your copy is like this! The pressings were done on the new Canadian WarmTone presses. Despite the 'teething problems' previously mentioned, which are inevitable with any new pressing operation, I am very encouraged by the quality that Dublin Vinyl is capable of producing on this outing, which I assume is its first major label pressing assignment. Confirmation of the pressing plant was confirmed to me by Universal Ireland. I suspected that the records had been pressed at Dublin Vinyl but sought confirmation from the label nonetheless. Here's hoping that Universal Ireland will now turn its attention to a quality vinyl reissue of 'Planxty', the group's first album!!!

As a footnote, lest you have any doubts as to the seriousness of this new pressing facility, both vinyl records are packed in black polylined inner sleeves. A lesser outfit would have put the records in harsh unlined inner sleeves or worse still printed card inners. Kudos to Dublin Vinyl!
