The Wall is a rock opera presented as a double album by the English progressive rock band Pink Floyd, released on November 30th, 1979. It was subsequently performed live, with elaborate theatrical effects, and made into a film. Following in the footsteps of their previous albums, The Wall is a concept album - specifically, it deals largely with the theme of isolation from one's peers. The Wall was Roger Waters' crowning accomplishment in Pink Floyd. It documented the rise and fall of a rock star named Pink Floyd, based on Waters' own experiences and the tendencies he'd observed in people around him. The album opens by welcoming the unwitting listener to Floyd's show In the Flesh, then turns back to childhood memories of his father's death in World War II Another Brick in the Wall, Pt. 1, his mother's over protectiveness Mother, and his fascination with and fear of sex Young Lust. By the time Goodbye Cruel World closes the first disc, the wall is built and Pink is trapped in the midst of a mental breakdown. Pink Floyd were pioneers in the live music experience, renowned for their lavish stage shows that combine intense visual experiences with music to create a show in which the performers themselves are almost secondary. Pink Floyd's combination of music and visuals set the standard for rock musicians. As well as visuals, Pink Floyd set standards in sound quality with innovative use of sound effects and panning quadrophonic speaker systems. Part of Classic Rock Review's celebration of the 35th anniversary of 1979 albums. The Wall was the most ambitious album of a long and storied career filled with ambitious projects by Pink Floyd. This double-length concept album was composed by vocalist and bassist Roger Waters and spawned an equally ambitious tour, a feature film, and a legacy which has only grown in the three and a half decades since its release in 1979. Today is the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. Title: Pink Floyd The Wall Redux 2002. I had the opportunity to see this show performed live in San Francisco back in 2002. The entire album was performed live with a band two guitars, drums, bass, keyboard playing the album all the way through as other cast members sang, danced, and acted out the story of the album. It's like a rock opera, in that the music is always playing, and all of the words in the piece are sung. It is not, however, acted out on stage as explicitly as a play or opera ordinarily would be the movement of the characters is more symbolic than realistic.
