Phil Manzanera decided to explore his Cuban roots, and attempted to mix Cuban-style music with rock. Initially he was working toward a more world music-oriented instrumental album. He then met up with is old friend, Tim Finn remember, Manzanera produced the first Split Enz album, who took it upon himself to write lyrics for the beautiful music he heard demoed by Manzanera. On Southern Cross Manzanera delves profoundly into his childhood memories living in Venezuela and keeping those impressions intact and available 35 or so years later to put them on record, well that's a just cause if I ever heard one. It's a radically less progressive soundtrack of life and times and mists of reflective memories, preferring a neo- traditional style, with heavy prog cosmetics nevertheless. While his 1990 solo album Southern Cross was an album of Latin music, Phil Manzanera started in 1999 a series of solo productions that reflect his past achievements in a modern context. Many musicians from past times turn up again on the recordings, like Brian Eno, Andy Mackay, Robert Wyatt, Bill MacCormick and many others. Guitars and sound.
