After People's Songs, Seeger and another former member of the Almanacs, Lee Hays, founded the Weavers, who achieved commercial success. In 1952, The Weavers went on hiatus due to the Red Scare Seeger and Hays both had Communist ties. After the demise of the Weavers, Seeger released a solo album, American Folk Songs for Children, in 1953 on Folkways Records. The 12-String Guitar as Played by Leadbelly. The 12-string guitar is a steel-string guitar with 12 strings in six courses, which produces a thicker, more ringing tone than a standard six-string guitar. Typically, the strings of the lower four courses are tuned in octaves, with those of the upper two courses tuned in unison. The gap between the strings within each dual-string course is narrow, and the strings of each course are fretted and plucked as a single unit. The neck is wider, to accommodate the extra strings, and is similar to the width. Tony had written to Seeger asking for advice in finding a 12 string. Pete sent back contact info for Stan Francis in the UK. Tony wrote to Francis and got back the drawing and a letter explaining options and pricing. A few years later, when I was seeking out every 12 string reference, recording, catalogue, article, photo, ad, and whatever, Tony gave me the drawing. He always said he would give me the accompanying letter when he found it, but he never did. So many things came full circle for me at this inauguration. Pete Seeger teaches the 12-string guitar as played by the virtuoso Lead Belly through a detailed breakdown of both the instrument itself how to tune it, steel vs. silk strings etc. and step-by-step explanations of Lead Bellys songs. Here, Pete Seeger pays homage to his friend and mentor Lead Belly by teaching us his songs. Liner notes include detailed instructions and song notation.
