Saxophonist Peter Apfelbaum gathered together a new version of his Hieroglyphics for this record date, inspired by rediscovering fragments of music left over from the 1970s. Influenced strongly not only by avant-garde jazz but world music, the Hieroglyphics are, at times, reminiscent of Abdullah Ibrahim's groups, open to the rhythms, harmonies, and melodies of American, Latin, European, African, and Asian music. Since then Apfelbaum has released but one solo album with his sextet, 1996s Luminous Charms and made a handful of appearances on John Zorn's own Tzadik label, appearing on tributes to Zorn's Masada Ensemble. It Is Written finds Apfelbaum back in familiar territory with a massive group of both transplanted and native New Yorkers backing him up. Despite the hiatus, Apfelbaum and his most celebrated ensemble are back in action and have lost none of their initial fire. Multi-instrumentalist and composer Peter Apfelbaum's It Is Written is his first recording with the East Coast version of his large Hieroglyphics ensemble.
