One of the great swingDixieland cornetists, Ruby Braff went through long periods of his career unable to find work because his music was considered out-of-fashion, but his fortunes improved by the 1970s. A very expressive player who in later years liked to build his solos up to a low note, Braff's playing was instantly recognizable within seconds. Braff mostly worked around Boston in the late '40s. Jazz At Storyville Vol 1Jazz At Storyville Vol 2Portrait Of Pee WeePee. After youve listened to this album, youll see how anemic the ensemble and solo work except for Braff and Russell is on the two Storyville albums. Still, its Pee Wee on all the albums in this collection. Thats reason enough to own it. Ruby Braff is again present, together with Bud Freeman and Vic Dickenson, and the arrangements were provided by Nat Pierce, who also played piano. Pee Wee Russell Plays followed almost exactly a year later and is noteworthy, first as featuring only his own compositions, and secondly as having been recorded in stereo.
