Sex was the thematic preoccupation of producer Patrick Cowley, reflecting the strong connection between disco and gay bathhouses in late-70s San Francisco. Fittingly, the first concrete attempt to canonise Cowley as an electronic music auteur is a compilation of his soundtrack work for gay pornographic films. Few musical legacies are as haunted by the spectre of sex-its pleasures and its consequences-as that of disco producer Patrick Cowley. The much different School Daze consists of instrumental recordings, made from 1973 through 1981, that Cowley handed to John Coletti, owner of gay pornographic film outlet Fox Studio. Coletti used much of the material here, some of which he altered in speed and pitch, for School Daze and Muscle Up.
