The album was preceded by the singles Dust, Berlin Got Blurry, Outside, and Human Performance. It received a nomination for Best Recording Package at the 2017 Grammy Awards. The band wrote much of Human Performance while recording the album at Dreamland Studios, New York: We were living there, working around the clock, and there was never any time where we. Human Performance is the fifth studio album by American punk rock band Parquet Courts, released on April 8, 2016 on Rough Trade Records. Human Performance is Parquet Courtss fourth studio album fifth including Content Nausea by the Parkay Quarts and their first release on the Rough Trade record label. The record was recorded in piecemeal fashion at multiple studios including Dreamland in upstate New York, Sonelab in Massachusetts and The Loft aka the Wilco Loft in Chicago. The album is kind of based on this idea of what it is to be a performer, not maybe in the sense that bands are performers, but how all of us performIts about the relationship between performance and authenticity, and if those two things are mutually exclusive. Album 2016 14 Songs. Brooklyn art-rockers Parquet Courts have sometimes obscured their warmth under a cover of discord, challenging song structures and sardonic detachment. Their fifth album simplifies and purifies their sound to thrilling effect though. Whether theyre dovetailing or duelling, Andrew Savage and Austin Browns punchy riffs sublimate into the bands poppiest hooks yet. Theres emotional engagement too, with Savage opening up his heartache and isolation on the bittersweet Human Performance and Berlin Got Blurry s collision of thrumming post-punk and surf guitar licks. Parquet Courts' third album is a bracing snapshot of a band on a roll. Their music is not explicitly political, but Parquet Courts are definitely a thinking band, and a critical one. When Parquet Courts debuted in 2011 with the supremely bratty American Specialties cassette-its Dada-esque cover art a repurposed Chinese takeout menu-Andrew Savage, who is also a visual artist, presented the facts unsentimentally. Human Performance finds the band at its songwriting peak: almost every song is catchy and tight enough to be a single. Kicking off the album with the driving, droney Dust sets the tone right away, with its clean production and punchy rhythm section pounding the chorus directly into the brains of listeners. Parquet Courts are a band of sloppily-dressed white dudes who play pointed, angular guitar rock and whose sung-spoken lyrics are written from a wry, erudite, and sometimes detached point of view. So that means they will always have to deal with the Pavement comparison. Itll trail after them like vulture shadows until they finally expire. Its not their fault. Its not our fault, either. Its just a thing that happens. Genre: Indie Rock. Whats most prominent on Human Performance. is how its undercurrent of anxiety and paranoia-forged by the arrangements and relayed via the lyrics of Andrew Savage and Austin Brown-precipitates an indifference that becomes even more engaging thanks to its sophistication.
