Looking Through Heather Over the course of five stellar albums, Papercuts' Jason Quever has shown himself to be a top-notch song-writer and producer, equally at home with lush, baroque textures and more stripped-down arrangements. Papercuts' sixth album, Parallel Universe Blues, had a lot of change wrapped up in its creation. After a decade-plus run of albums created mainly in his Bay Area home studio, the band's main driving force, Jason Quever, relocated to Los Angeles and decided to work in a real studio. There was also another new label in the mix, this time Slumberland Records. Most importantly, the Papercuts' sound went through some major renovations. Parallel Universe Blues is a dreamy, laidback record made for easy listening. It's a great album with a step up in its production. It would be more interesting for Quever to do something a little bit different this time around, but staying true to your roots isn't a bad thing. I’m sure that if you listen with just the right ears you can hear me sighing with frustration once more, as this liquid band have yet again delivered but two songs on this album which I’ll add to my ever-growing collection of material. Both “Looking Through Heather” and “How to Quit Smoking” are simply dream-laden perfect adventures into my garden of ethereal delight.

By no means am I suggesting that the rest of the songs aren’t good, it’s simply that for one reason or another, the remaining numbers don’t feel complete or fleshed out in the same manner as these two tracks, songs that resound with an inviting full-bodied sensuality that harbors no edges or angular notes to drift me back from the slumbers of a wasted afternoon.

Sadly Parallel Universe Blues stands like all of the other Papercuts albums for me, where each album needs to be lovingly combed in order that the essential dream pop numbers be delivered, songs that float with a haunting sonic purity and perfection.

*** The Fun Facts: A parallel universe, also known as a parallel dimension, alternate universe or alternate reality, is a hypothetical self-contained plane of existence, co-existing with one's own. The sum of all potential parallel universes that constitute reality is often referred to as a multiverse.
