Shortly after the release of the American Beauty soundtrack - which featured tantalizing excerpts from Thomas Newman's music bookending a collection of pop songs - came the release of the full score. From the film's haunting main theme and Any Other Name to the witty, percussive Dead Already, Choking the Bishop, and Mr. Smarty Man, Newman's score evokes as much feeling and humor as the film itself does. My Beauty is a solo album by Kevin Rowland, lead singer of Dexys Midnight Runners. It was released in 1999, eleven years after his solo debut The Wanderer. In the interim he had experienced problems with drug addiction. My Beauty is an album of cover songs, although Rowland rewrote several of the lyrics to reflect his battles against substance abuse. The album is notorious for its cover, which shows Rowland in drag and heavy make up, an image which Rowland also used during contemporaneous appearances. It's a somewhat painful album, hard to listen to, but Rowland, the leader of Dexy's Midnight Runners, has always been a master of the genre of soul, and that's what he's doing here, soul versions of some songs that got him through tough times. He strips his heart naked on this recording, and reveals a lot of pain and a lot of beauty. The songs, interestingly, are overplayed radio staples. Hipsters generally hate those kind of things, and Rowland tries to re-claim them. Receiving unexpected answers, he begins to see how these things interlock and how even loss can reveal moments of meaning and beauty.
