It is based on a story by King that was inspired by the real-life Chicken Ranch in La Grange, Texas. It is the late 1970s, and a brothel has been operating outside of fictional Gilbert, Texas subbing for real locale La Grange for more than a century. I purchased this album when I got called to play bass for this musical only days before the first show. The musical used all the songs on the album and did them in the same key, which was a great aid for practicing. The songs are great. The movie of the same name, only used a few of the many songs in the stage play, and the movie skipped many gems. The lively country score is competently performed by the entire cast, with the possible exception of Sheriff Dodd's solo Good Old Girl. That song is sung by Gary Sandy, the former star of WKRP In Cincinnati, with a rather affected-sounding bass. But the main problem with the soundtrack is the musical itself. Carol Hall's songs are sometimes clever and often catchy, but when all is said and done, there really isn't a memorable show-stopper in the lot.
