Sorceress is the twelfth studio album by the Swedish progressive rock band Opeth. The album was released on 30 September 2016 via record label Nuclear Blast and the band's own imprint Moderbolaget. The album was produced and mixed by Tom Dalgety and recorded at Rockfield Studios in Wales. Following the album's release, the band embarked on a world tour with bands the Sword, Sahg, and Myrkur as supporting acts. Thematically, the album draws inspiration from Åkerfeldt's personal life, as he divorced in. With their latest release Sorceress , Opeth continue to refine their progressive chops, building on elements from Heritage and 2014s Pale Communion and becoming even more comfortable in this incarnation and evolution of their sound. Frontman Mikael Akerfeldt had a goal when writing the songs for the album: The only thing I was thinking about with this record was to write that songs didnt musically connect. I made sure if I had a song that was new sounding for this record, Id make the next song completely different. I think the songs are very different from one another. Its very diverse. Around the time when Opeth were recording their second album Morningrise, they formed Steel, a tribute to the 80s speed metal they grew up with. They only released one EP, Heavy Metal Machine, and its cheekiness and obvious nostalgic air that stuff was already ancient in 1996 did not obscure the fact that Mikael Åkerfeldt is a legit shredder. Dan Swanö, Opeths producer at the time and former mastermind of Edge of Sanity, sounded legit charming, like Brian Johnson trying his hand at AOR. Steel felt like dudes just kicking it, which is something you would never say about Opeth. Sorceress is an album released on September 30, 2016 by progressive metal band Opeth. It is their 12th album overall and the first to be released under Moderbolaget Records, a joint venture between the band and Nuclear Blast Records.
