Nunzio Rotondo Palestrina, Rome, 1924, Rome 2009, September 15, a trumpeter and composer, is considered one of the most important Italian jazz musicians. In 1949 he formed the Hot Club Rome sextet with Franco Raffaelli alto saxophone, Ettore Crisostomi piano, Carlo Pes guitar, Carletto Loffredo bass and Gilberto Gil Cuppini drums. In the 1950s, he would also be involved in some of the earliest recordings of Bebop in Italy. A gifted child, Rotondo studied music, first playing piano, then trumpet. In the late 40s he was leader of a small jazz group and in those years and into the early 50s regularly supported visiting American jazzmen including Louis Armstrong. He also played with Bill Coleman, Roy Eldridge and others from the jazz mainstream, but by the early 50s he was taking heed of bop, leading and co-leading several boppish bands in company with fellow nationals such as Gil Cuppini and Romano Mussolini. Nunzio Rotondo 11 December 1924 15 September 2009 was an Italian jazz trumpeter and bandleader, born in Palestrina. Rotondo began on piano in his youth before taking up trumpet, and had already played with Louis Armstrong on that instrument by the end of the 1940s. Early in the 1950s he played with Flavio Ambrosetti, Bill Coleman, Roy Eldridge, Duke Ellington, Zoot Sims, and Toots Thielemans, and also led his own ensembles which included, among others, Gil Cuppini, Roberto Nicolosi, and Romano
