Illiteracy Will Prevail remained a highly sought-after and elusive item for collectors as Nirvana rose to fame, became extensively bootlegged, and ultimately had their career cut short by Cobain's death in 1994. Numerous forgeries arose before an incomplete, poor-quality version of the demo was leaked in March 2006. Illiteracy Will Prevail was an album recorded and released by the short-lived punk rock band Fecal Matter in 1985. Some songs from this album were later re-recorded by Kurt Cobains future band, Nirvana such as the June 1989 version of Downer, or subsequent live versions of Spank Thru. Illiteracy Will Prevail Q&A. Illiteracy will Prevail is a lo-fi demo recorded at home on a 4-track tape recorder. It is a very early example of the abrasive American punk-inspired grunge. Illiteracy Will Prevail is the only surfaced recording from Fecal Matter, a band formed by Kurt Cobain and Dale Crover.
