Short intro
Holon is an album by Swiss pianist and composer Nik Bärtsch's band Ronin recorded in France in 2007 and released on the ECM label. You can see in the mind's eye and fully hear this music in a setting where an audience is urging the band on, not just listening, but moving. How much better does it get than that The more things stay the same in Ronin, the more they change. Pianist Nik Bärtsch's Zurich quintet Ronin has released a handful of recordings, but Holon is only the second released in the United States. When Stoa was issued in 2006, it was like this startling blast of air. Was it jazz Was it minimalist classical music Was it acoustic techno Bärtsch calls it zen funk. While Nik Bärtsch's 2006 ECM debut, Stoa, was a powerful first shot across the international bow, garnering a place on many journalists' Best of lists for the year, the Swiss pianist had, in fact, been honing his self-proclaimed Zen Funk since the beginning of the decade, starting with the equally descriptive Ritual Groove Music Ronin Rhythm Records, 2001. Holon capitalizes on the success and innovation of Stoa, again featuring his Ronin quintet, proving the value of. Holon is a music album by Nik Bärtsch's Ronin released in 2008. On Holon, Nik Bärtsch's Ronin fashions disparate elements of jazz, funk, and ambient music into a musical fabric that glimmers and pulses with energy, sounding in places as though it could be the sound track to a lava lamp or music playing on the bridge of an interstellar starship. The interplay among the band is heady, mesmerizing stuff that walks the line between precision and improvisation with a hip grace and swagger. This brew will not be for everyone, but those who are looking for something modern, something different, will not be disappointed by Holon. As a. Nik Bärtsch's Ronin - Stoa 2006.
