Recorded between 1968 and 1969, it was released in 1969 by record label Island. Five Leaves Left was recorded between July 1968 and June 1969 at Sound Techniques in London, England. Engineer John Wood recalled that would track live, singing and playing along with the string section without the use of any overdubbing. For the song River Man, producer Joe Boyd described Drake playing on a stool in the centre of. Формируйте собственную коллекцию записей Nick Leaves Left was Nick Drakes first album, released on July 3, 1969 by Island Records. The album was recorded between July 1968 and June 1969 at Sound Techniques in London, England, and was produced by Joe Boyd. The title of the album refers to the message printed at the near-end of a pack of Rizla cigarette papers, which Drake probably used for both tobacco and marijuana. The name strikes a sense of foreboding, as the last few moments of fall before winter. Furthermore, the fact that Drake would come to commit suicide five years after its release gives the album an eerie and tragic signif. It was recorded between 1968 and 1969 and released in 1969 by record label Island. Among his various backing musicians, Drake was accompanied by Richard Thompson, at that time with Fairport Convention and Danny Thompson of The Pentangle. Robert Kirby, a friend of Drake's from his youth, arranged the string instruments for several tracks while Harry Robinson arranged the strings for River Man. The title of the album is said to be a reference to the old Rizla cigarette papers packet, which used to co. Five Leaves Left has come to be internationally acknowledged as a classic, landing at No. 280 in Rolling Stones 2003 list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time, 85th in a 2005 poll by the UKs Channel 4 TV, and No. 74 in an NME all-time list. In 1975, the NMEs Nick Kent described it as one of those albums that seem tied to exhorting and then playing on a particular mood in the listener, like Astral Weeks and Forever Changes. Indeed, the publics apparent indifference to Drakes singular talents was not for lack of some critical approval. When Five Leaves Left was released in July 1969, it sold poorly and got almost no radio play. Spare blessed souls like John Peel, the airwaves were silent with this album and magazines did not do it justice. Melody Maker is known for its ability to trash great music, but it outdid itself calling the album An awkward mixture of folk and cocktail jazz. Nick Drake is leaning on a brick wall, hands clasped on his belt, somewhat bemused watching a leaping Englishman passing by. Turns out that photographer Keith Morris took more photos that day of Nick watching busy Londoners going about their daily business. Nick, even at the youngest we hear from him, is an old soul , hes been worn down by the continuous rain of life, slowly drenching his clothes, but on Five Leaves Left we still here that. read more. Surely the best Drake, the most classic tunes on the one disc and the best balance between sparseness and embellishment out of his three long players. Or consider a donation . An absolutely brilliant record, both in terms of writing and performance and in production. Joe Boyd gets out of the way and lets Drake's voice and guitar shine. Other instrumentation is sparse and gorgeous. The real standout, however, is the string arrangements. I have a recent Island Records reissue on what feels like 200g vinyl. It sounds really good, but it is my second copy, and both were pretty badly warped. So beware.
Holy shit this album is amazing . . . .
A great album. All of Nick's albums are great. Love his voice and guitar. I'm mainly into punk stuff and love him dearly. I consider this the first folk record I ever got into. "River Man" is my favorite song off this album. It's a good end-of-the-day song. Good for when you're depressed, drinking beer and watching the sun go down on a hot summer day. RIP. Hard to believe he passed away at only 26. I'd heard the name Nick Drake off and on for years and assumed he was a 70-something year old music legend. Didn't really know who he was. Quite surprising when I finally heard him and realized he had died decades before and was quite young. His name is quite handsome.
Very 1st pressings are on textured Pink Block Label - 'Polydor' Pressing This can be easily identified by the textured matte label with the ridge around the edge. The album is on heavy vinyl and the matrix numbers are ILPS 9105 A//2 & ILPS 9105 B//2 (A//3 - A//3 varients exist) which are machine stamped. There isn't an A1/B1 matrix pink label. All of these are Pink Rim labels and probably unofficial reissues. The gatefold sleeve was printed by Ernest J. Day and the track order for Day is Done and Way to Blue is reversed. The labels show the correct track order listing. The Island Records address on the back is Basing Street, London W11.
I just picked up this copy too. Does your cover have the credit for Saturday Sun spelt Tristam Fry instead of Tristan Fry?
Pretty sure I have the very first press as mine has the A//2 B//2 matrix numbers and Matt label with raised rim. My centre labels have the correct track listing order but reversed on the sleeve only.
Just to clarify did the original album have track listings for Way To Blue and Day Is Done reversed on both the gatefold sleeve and the record label. I have read that it is the sleeve only that has them reversed. The notes above suggest they were reversed on the first cover and the label ???
