The title of the album refers to the message printed at the near-end of a pack of Rizla cigarette papers, which Drake probably used for both tobacco and marijuana. The name strikes a sense of foreboding, as the last few moments of fall before winter. Furthermore, the fact that Drake would come to commit suicide five years after its release gives the album an eerie and tragic signif. It was recorded between 1968 and 1969 and released in 1969 by record label Island. Among his various backing musicians, Drake was accompanied by Richard Thompson, at that time with Fairport Convention and Danny Thompson of The Pentangle. Robert Kirby, a friend of Drake's from his youth, arranged the string instruments for several tracks while Harry Robinson arranged the strings for River Man. The title of the album is said to be a reference to the old Rizla cigarette papers packet, which used to co. When Five Leaves Left was released in July 1969, it sold poorly and got almost no radio play. Melody Maker is known for its ability to trash great music, but it outdid itself calling the album An awkward mixture of folk and cocktail jazz.
