The album was influenced by the then growing acid scene, and Sumner's experiences at Shroom in London. It was also New Order's final studio album to be released under Factory Records though not their final Factory release, that being the. An ad called Advertising technique promoted the album in the US. The cherub on the sleeve is a garden ornament that Peter Saville found on Pimlico Road. Peter thought the bacchanalian image was ironically fitting for the new drug-fuelled hedonism in the music scene.
