As labels would become better at protecting music Nas switched from Columbia to Def Jam and then to his very own Mass Appeal in the time after, the majority of the songs on The Lost Tapes 2 are new at first listen to even the most dedicated Gods Son disciples. The Lost Tapes II, is a grab bag of loose tracks from this era, four very different album sessions, and naturally its a messy display of the many sides of Nas - storyteller, street life narrator, conscious MC, rap showboat, true-school historian, emo diarist - at both his most essential and least essential. The best music on The Lost Tapes II evokes the crumbling cassette on the cover - not exactly a return to the days of Nasty Nas 1992s Halftime 12-inch, but the type of headknocking, lyrically dense, no-frills boom-bap that labels like Duck Down, Fat Beats and Nas own Mass Appeal Record. And The Lost Tapes does, on the surface, seem like a possible candidate for that revival. Ostentatiously released for the real headz, this collection features tracks only previously released on mixtapes or over the Internet. Hopefully, this means none of the jiggy, commercial-friendly nonsense that's really dragged down his records the past few years.
