Short intro
New YorkAddisLondon: The Story of Ethio Jazz 19651975 is a compilation album of work by jazz artist Mulatu Astatke. The album covers his early recordings in the UK in 1965, his work on the Worthy label in New York and his recording in Addis on Amha, Phillips and Axum in the 1970s. The album received the Best New Reissue honor from Pitchfork Media. All tracks are written by Mulatu Astatke. Ethio jazz. That's what Mulatu Astatke called his style of music when he invented it back in the 1960s, and it means exactly what it implies: Ethiopian melodies played on Western instruments with room for improvisation. Astatke was a pioneer for his country's modern music. His concept of instrumental music as an end in itself was a bit foreign in his homeland, where singers rule the popular music sphere, and he was among the very first musicians from Ethiopia to learn about music while abroad. The pioneer of Ethio jazz, Mulatu Astatke developed his sound through studies in the UK during the 50s and a series of seminal recordings for domestic label Amha before travelling to New York to record the Mulatu Of Ethiopia album. Since collaborating with The Heliocentrics in 2009 for Strut, he has continued recording and is a major draw on the global touring circuit. May 2020. Mulatu Of Ethiopia. May 2017. Mulatu Steps Ahead. The excellent compilation New York Addis London-three cities that shaped Astatkes sound-opens with one of his better known songs, Yekermo Sew, which sports a great groove, nice horns, splashy keyboards and a fuzzed-out electric guitar solo. Among the tracks that display a Latin influence are the salsafied I Faram Gami I Faram and the Latin jazz-flavoured Girl from Addis Ababa. Ebo Lala , a wedding of Afro-Cuban and Ethiopian stylings, finds the singer Seifu Yohannes backed by rough-hewn horns and a chanting chorus. Jazz Ethnic. Mulatu Astatke , Frank Holder and others.
